Did you know that you can improve your general health and mental wellbeing by walking 10,000 steps a day?

But why 10,000? This originated from Japanese researchers back in the 1960s. They found that the average person took between 3,500 to 5,000 steps each day and that their health could be drastically improved if they increased this to 10,000. Since this study, the 10,000 steps goal has been picked up by huge fitness brands, and even the World Health Organisation.

Walking 10,000 steps a day has plenty of benefits, including:

Its Not Just Your Shoes, But Whats Inside Of Them

Before you start walking 10,000 steps a day, it’s important to make sure that your feet are prepared. The most important thing is to make sure you have comfortable shoes and insoles which don’t cause friction, leading to blisters and provide the right level of support for your feet. There are also a variety of insoles, gels and felts available that can help improve the comfort of your footwear.

Don’t forget your socks

Don’t underestimate the difference a good sock can make. Socks without seams prevent irritation and rubbing, which can make a big difference after a few miles of walking. We also offer a range of socks that have been designed specifically for walking and hiking, with integrated arch support and enhanced compression for improved performance, stamina and comfort.

Prepare your feet

Once you are sure you have appropriate footwear, you can begin to get your feet ready. This doesn’t involve anything drastic, simply making sure that your toenails are clipped can help tol avoid ingrown toenails which could cause infection, pain and discomfort. You can also condition the skin the cold weather too. By moisturising the feet, you protect and strengthen the epidermis which prevents the onset of cracked and dry skin. Foot creams, designed for the cold weather are available, especially for those who feel the discomfort of chillblains and numbness.

Stock up your first aid cupboard

You probably won’t need it, but now is a good idea to stock up your first aid cupboard…. Just in case! Think cold packs, blister plasters, normal plasters and pain relief creams.
